The wine from the Island's Domain
In 1910, F.J Fournier, after making a fortune in Mexican silver mines, bought Porquerolles island where he planted 450 acres of vines. He died in 1935, leaving behind him a widow and six daughters. In 1957, the island was divided in four parts corresponding to the 4 natural plains.
Lelia Fournier, married with Dominique Le Ber was the only member of the family to replant 50 acres of vines on her land and in 1964 built a new winery. In 1980 her son, Sébastien Le Ber after having completed his education at the agricultural college, took over the farm.
"Domaine de l'île" was extended by another 100 acres rented to the State which had bought almost the whole island.
The growing process is completely organic, that is, no weed killers and no other chemicals insecticides are used.
The harvest is made in baskets of 50 lbs. So as not to damage the grape before pressing and to make a selection of different grades (no small acid or rotten grapes).
For the rosé, after pressing and soaking, the juice is cooled and left for 20 hours so as to give time for the sediments to settle. Then it is sent to fermentation whith a temperature control.
The wines have this special taste which, experts think, it derives from the quality of the soil, thee islands location and the mix of grapes : 30% Grenache, 30 % Cincault, 20 % Tibouren, and 20 % Mourvèdre for the rosé. Grenache ans Syrah for red wine. 100 % Rolle for white wine. A very small mount of SO2 is added to avoid headaches !
